Yes, that’s right! We’re Critters Against Cancer and
we’ve kicked off the crittin’ fun!

New York Times best selling author, Stacia Deutsch is a Breast Cancer SURVIVOR and together with our team, we're walking 40 miles at the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. We have an amazing group of authors and illustrators working with us to raise funds that will help FIGHT BACK! 

All donations will go directly to the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer via Jenni and Stacia's team fundraising pages. For more information about how donations are used to help fight Breast Cancer, go HERE.

CRITTERS AGAINST CANCER AUCTION

CRITTER: Award-Winning Debut Author, Lori Degman

PRIZE: One critique of your RHYMING picture book, 1000 words max.

Lori Degman's picture book, 1 Zany Zoo, was the winner of the 2008 Cheerios New Author Contest and a mini version of the book was including inside 2.2 million boxes of Cheerios this past spring. The hardcover, published by Simon & Schuster, was released in July 2010. Lori loves writing humorous rhyming stories and loves helping other rhymers fine-tune their rhythm and rhyme. She is represented by Jamie Weiss Chilton at Andrea Brown Literary Agency.

When not writing, Lori is a teacher of deaf and hard of hearing students. She lives in Vernon Hills, Illinois with her husband and two sons. You can find out more about Lori and her book at www.loridegman.com.

CRITTERS: 2010 SCBWI Barbara Karlin Grant Winners, Diana Murray and Jenni Bielicki

PRIZE: Two picture book critiques (1000 words max. each) and you may choose option #1, #2, or #3 below.

OPTION #1: You may chose to send one manuscript to both Diana and Jenni simultaneously.
OPTION #2: You may chose to send two different manuscripts, one to Diana and one to Jenni simultaneously.
OPTION #3: You may choose to submit one manuscript to Diana or Jenni, wait for comments (and revise if you choose) and then submit for your second critique from the other critter, Jenni or Diana.

Diana Murray won the 2010 SCBWI Barbara Karlin Grant for her rhyming picture book entitled, GRIMELDA THE VERY MESSY WITCH. Her poems are forthcoming in publications including SCBWI Bulletin, Highlights, and Spider. Diana was formerly an art director in the field of graphic design.

Jenni Bielicki is not only your Critters Against Cancer hostess, but is also an award-winning writer and poet. Her rhyming nonfiction picture book manuscript, STARRY KALAHARI, won the 2010 SCBWI Barbara Karlin Runner-Up Grant and first place at the SCBWI-LA Writers Day in the nonfiction category.

Jenni likes both the creative and business sides of writing and is a self-proclaimed research nerd. She earned her marketing degree before taking on the most important full-time job of her life, when she earned the highly honored title of Mommy.

Jenni lives in Orange County, California with her husband, her 5, 10 and 12 year-old kids, her Schnoodle and her daughter's hamster.

Jana McBurney-Lin lived half her adult life in Asia where she wrote for media in seven countries, including National Public Radio, Writer's Digest, United Airlines, Islands Magazine, Singapore Straits Times, and The Japan Times. Her first novel (My Half of the Sky, KOMENAR 2006) which focuses on a contemporary young Chinese woman trying to be modern in the midst of village tradition, was given numerous literary awards. Additionally it was chosen as a National Booksense August Pick of the Month and Forbes Book Club Pick.

Lisa Wheeler is passionate about children’s books. “I love everything about them, including the smell.” To date, Lisa has twenty-eight titles on library shelves, with more to follow over the next few years. She’s written picture books in prose and rhyme, an easy reader series, three books of poems, and creative nonfiction for the very young.

Awards include the 2004 Mitten Award for Old Cricket, given by the Michigan Library Association, the 2005/06 Great Lakes, Great Books Award and 2005 Missouri Building Blocks Award for Bubble Gum, Bubble Gum, the 2006 Bluebonnet Award for Seadogs , the 2006/07 South Carolina Picture Book Award for Bubble Gum, Bubble Gum and most recently, the 2008 The Theodor Seuss Geisel Award for Jazz Baby given by the American Library Association.

Her newest titles include Dino-Baseball, illustrated by Barry Gott (CarolRhoda), and Ugly Pie, illustrated by Heather Solomon (Harcourt).

Lisa shares her Michigan home with one husband, one dog, and an assortment of anthropomorphic characters.

My name is Tricia but you can call me Frizz. I live in Michigan with my husband and two dogs. Creating childrenswear art as both a staff and freelance artist, for clients including Kmart and Target, has been my favorite "work" so far. My experience with textile design revealed my passion for children's artwork.

Embroidery, softie making, painting, stamp carving, and designing fabric patterns for kids curls my toes. Seeing my critters in all areas of the children's market would be cool & stuff.  Oh, and I love cupcakes!

Kim Norman’s first picture book, JACK OF ALL TAILS, was released from Dutton in 2007. CROCODADDY, published by Sterling Children's Books, debuted as a May 2009 feature for the Children's Book of the Month Club. A year later, it came out as a Scholastic Book Club paperback.

Kim is looking forward to publication of two Sterling titles in the fall of 2010: TEN ON THE SLED, and ALL KINDS OF KITTENS. CRITTER: Brenda Reeves Sturgis, author of
10 Turkeys in the Road

PRIZE: One critique of your PB manuscript (1000 words max.)

In 2007 Brenda’s rhyming picture book manuscript Touchdown (then titled THE FOOTBALL GAME) won first place (out of 400 manuscripts) in The Smart Writer’s contest, judged by famed writer Verla Kay. Brenda’s manuscript 10 TURKEYS IN THE ROAD received an honorable mention in the same contest.

In August 2007, Brenda received an acceptance from Blooming Tree Press for a poem titled, "Snuggled Child", that will be included in their Sweet Dreams anthology picture book, to be released in 2011.

In 2008, 10 TURKEYS IN THE ROAD was sold to Marshall Cavendish and will be released in 2011.

Brenda’s a rhyming picture book writer who says, “Rhyming makes her heart sing!” On nice sunny days you can hear her rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” being sung to any moose or loon that will listen at the lake, but they think she should definitely stick to writing!

Brenda Reeves Sturgis lives in Shapleigh Maine with her husband Gary and their daughter Stacie. Brenda is the proud mother and mother-in-law to Seabren and Whitney Reeves, Stephen and Courtney Reeves and Shaun and Stephanie McIntyre. Brenda is also a grandmother to Seabren Reeves IV. She is represented by Teresa Kietlinksi of The Prosepect Agency.

Lori's written over 60 stories and books for kids. She pens non-fiction series about animals and extreme sports, writes fiction and non-fiction for the library and educational market. Lori's published many stories in the Los Angeles Times Kids' Reading Room page. But most of all, Lori loves writing novels for middle grade readers, many of which are set in unusual places around the world.

At home, Lori presents at author festivals all over Southern California, and teaches creative writing classes wherever she can. She speaks Spanish, and has learned some Swahili and Greek. Lori loves to camp in the Sierras and on the beach, hike, snorkel, run, dance, draw, and sing...and eat Mediterranean food with her family.
